Maggie Estep's stardom rose exponentially in the early '90s when she became an MTV celebrity, starring in commercials for the network as well as their Spoken Word Tour in 1994. Such mass media exposure tended to obscure her talents as a poet, writer and performance artist, all of which are on display on her debut album, No More Mister Nice Girl. Sure, the musical numbers are a little awkward, but Estep's words are vicious, cutting, smart, provocative and funny. The music may have dated and so has some of the pop culture references, but Estep's words retain their power on No More Mister Nice Girl.
