The Passion of Jesus is the story of his last days and hours on earth. The earliest Christians regarded the story as the key to understanding God’s revelation in the life and teaching of Jesus (Paul: “I preach Christ crucified.”) The passion is traditionally read during holy week in Christian churches. Beginning at least as early as the 8th century the passion was chanted. Through the centuries more elaborate musical settings were written, ultimately with several soloists (each taking the part of narrator or character such as Jesus or Pilate) accompanied by multiple choirs and orchestras in the most elaborate versions. We set out to create a Passion Oratorio for our time. We think that this story speaks for itself so you will hear little musical reflection ("Dear Jesus, you who died for our sins..."). Even the chorales encapsulate and intensify the story the gospel writers tell. It takes place a long time ago, in a very different culture, so some of the things people say and do seem odd in the 21st century. We have not airbrushed the story but rather tried to produce a clear and lucid translation of the Greek.
