Now-defunct (and sorely missed) label Monotremata Records brings us? THE RULE OF CAPTURE, the full-length debut by Houston-based electronic group dr:op:fr:am+e. This release marks the completion of a two-year effort to bring the wide-ranging sound of the group's many different experimental forays into a single cohesive whole. Running nearly an hour long in 15 tracks, the CD charts a journey through experimental drum & bass, cinematic sample-laden trance, dark ambient noise and even glitch-hop -- often in the same song. dr:op:fr:am+e has been active in Houston for a while, and this CD assembles many early compilation singles along with new material and several other surprises. For starters, the CD is *enhanced*, with video and web features. Newer material on the disk shows d:/f diving full on into noise experimentation ("table one") as well as collaborating with several guests. Witness the melding of the words and voice of Bliss Blood (of Houston's own Pain Teens and late of The Moonlighters) to the cyber-dub fury of "Radium" and the breakbeat frenzy of "Free 4 ?" And the hip-hop-meets-Joy Division grind of "Doinz Afoot" springs from work with MC Hundred (a.k.a. Frank Garymartin) and guitarist Scott Ayers, both from a long list of acts you wouldn't ordinarily think of in the same room as electronica -- such as the aforementioned Pain Teens, Truth Decay, Culturcide and the Walking Timebombs. One live track, "," is a selection from dr:op:fr:am+e's collaboration with the Invisible College, creating a live experimental abstract score for playback during screenings of F. W. Murnau's silent vampire classic Nosferatu. The track was recorded live during a screening at Houston performance space No Tsu Oh. Terrific stuff.
