Product Description Christa Cassidy is a fiery 13-year old cowgirl who finds it easier to get along with horses than people. Maybe that's why she is willing to risk everything in order to keep the wild mustang herds near her home in Nevada free from capture… especially a legendary band of mustangs known as the Lost Herd. Christa inspires her sister, her best friend, and her best friend’s brother (her first crush) to join in her quest. When a tragic accident breaks Christa’s heart and her spirit, only the Lost Herd can bring her back to life. But then a storm traps the mustangs in a flooded canyon and Christa will need to bring a divided town together in order to save them. Inspired by a real horse rescue, this story is about Christa’s fascination with an endangered herd of wild horses and how her special connection with them inspires her to rise up to become a horse advocate, whose passion and heart move an entire town to take action. Christa’s Luck is an epic adventure story of courage, friendship and freedom. Review "Highly recommended for fans of horse-related fiction." Kirkus Reviews "Get comfortable, grab your kleenex, and clear your schedule: if you happen to love horses, you won't be able to put down Christa's Luck, the debut young adult novel by Jennifer Grais and Michael Grais. Inspired by a real-life horse rescue, this coming-of-age story follows Christa, a 13-year-old cowgirl growing up on a ranch in Nevada, on her quest to save a local band of wild horses." Nina Fredrizzi/Horse Collaborative From the Author Michael and I were inspired to write Christa's Luck while on vacation in British Columbia in 2006. There, a fellow traveler and horse enthusiast showed us a recent viral Youtube video of horses being rescued from a flood in the Netherlands. The footage brought tears to my eyes, and Michael knew right away the story had potential. We weren't interested in chronicling a non-fiction account of the rescue, so we chose the American West, as we felt it offered the perfect setting for a spin-off fictional tale for teens. Later, while reading about the issues surrounding the preservation of the country's wild horses, I immediately saw a fit. That's when the stories started interweaving. Ultimately, this novel grew from our love of horses, and our respect for the challenges we face as we grow up. We hope you enjoy this story of Christa's Luck. *These comments are excerpted from an interview with Nina Fredrizzi for the Horse Collaborative. All I knew during the winter of my thirteenth year was that I was worried sick for all of Nevada's wild horses. Even as the snow fell, helicopters were driving the mustangs from the mountains and chasing them into a corral with a gate that would lock behind them forever. I wanted to save every last mustang from being captured. But as luck-or an incredible lack of luck-would have it, something so terrible, so unimaginable happened that in the end, I'd be the one who needed saving.
