Garrett Park, a small residential town in Montgomery County, Maryland, was modeled in the image of an English village and incorporated in 1898. Located on the main B. & O. Railroad commuter line, this bedroom community for Washington, D.C. has its own mayor, town council, elementary school, post office, and community swimming pool. Collected from thirty people who grew up in the town between the years of 1940 and 2001, these oral histories recount how Garrett Park provided an idyllic setting for childhood. The stories in this book are told with warmth and gratitude for a place that offered contact with the natural world and a strong sense of community. The children of Garrett Park experienced an enormous amount of freedom and safety to play and explore. Most of these stories were taken from the transcripts of recorded interviews, which the author edited and reorganized in narrative form. Growing Up in Garrett Park offers a window into this unique community at a time when children roamed freely and made their own entertainment.
