About Groovin': Horses, Hopes, And Slippery Slopes

Review "The author is a highly skilled storyteller—he describes each scene and person so well that the reader feels he was actually present. The book itself is inviting with meaningful quotes at the beginning of each part, some artwork, and a few photographs. The dialogue is crisp and well-placed . . . The reader is engaged from the first page to the last." —Readers' Favorite (5 Stars) "Israel's flowing memoir . . . is well organized, recounting the laughs, the sensuality, the highs and the sometimes very real danger he indulged in without apparent residual regret or embarrassment. He was always ready to move to the next happening, loveliest, or mountaintop trail, as befit the era and the ethos." —US Review of Books (RECOMMENDED) "Readers seeking an evocative, 'you are there' feel to a series of often-zany 1960s encounters will relish the tone and presentation of Groovin', a saga of hippie days gone wild." —Midwest Book Review "Rich Israel has an engaging voice, a lively sense of humor, a quirky group of friends, and a thirst for adventure. Best of all, he knows how to tell a good yarn. Sit down, put up your feet, and start groovin'." —Rivvy Neshama, author of Recipes for a Sacred Life: True Stories and a Few Miracles "Groovin' is a captivating read, full of fun, adventure, and spicy romance set in the spirited sixties. I wholeheartedly recommend adding it to your reading list." —Mitch Ditkoff, president of Idea Champions and author of Storytelling at Work Product Description 2017 READERS' FAVORITE BRONZE AWARD FOR NONFICTION ADVENTURE "Drugs, free love, broken hearts, and road trips aplenty" "Easy to read and hard to put down!" "A helluva lot of fun! In this delightful coming-of-age memoir, Rich Israel takes off on a journey of self-discovery during the late 1960s. Eschewing societal norms, he hitchhikes across the country, tries his hand at mining, works at a circus, and rides a horse hundreds of miles through the Rocky Mountain wilderness--all the while, the draft and Vietnam War are nipping at his heels. Join Rich and his canine companion, Charlie, as they encounter one colorful character after another, from a rifle-toting hippie to a loudmouthed carnival boss to a sultry flower child, whose bewitching powers lead to lust and longing--and heartbreak. A consummate storyteller, Rich peppers his writing with wit and sensitivity, as well as insights often revealed through mind-blowing acid trips. If you were there during this unique period in American history, Groovin' is certain to spark treasured memories. If not, you will get to enjoy the flavor and exhilaration associated with catching that phenomenal wave. About the Author Rich Israel was born in December 1945. The baby boomer generation officially began January 1, 1946, so he likes to say he was sent ahead as a scout to prepare the way. Raised in Sacramento, he spent his college years at the University of California, Davis, where he initially studied engineering, then transferred to biological sciences because of his love for nature. After graduation, he worked for the entomology department at the university for a year before dropping out and embarking on many of the adventures described in his writings. A half-decade later, he coauthored the first back-to-the-land book for his generation-Homesteader's Handbook-and went on to study natural medicine, releasing The Natural Pharmacy Product Guide in 1991. He is currently working on Trippin', the second book in his Hippie Adventurer Series, scheduled for release in the fall 2017. Rich lives with his wife, Doris, in Boulder, Colorado.
