About Moons And Ancestors

Product Description Fourth in a series with previously unreleased works by emerging composers, this 62-minute CD features the world premiere recordings of 3 chamber works by Robert Shechtman. Review Robert Shechtman (1939-2002) taught composition at Grand Valley State University (formerly Thomas Jefferson College) in western Michigan. On this album, titled Moons and Ancestors, listeners are treated to three examples of Shechtman's wide-ranging style. I'm more satisfied by the uncompromising clarity of Shechtman's aesthetic vision. The performances are, as usual, exemplary. All in all, a memorable release whose sounds will stay with me. --Rob Haskins, American Record Guide, January/February 2010In all probability, like me, you will not have come across the name of Robert Shechtman before. He was from West Michigan where he taught for many years. He was an award-winning composer as well as a jazz trombonist and bass player. Shechtman was apparently intrigued by searching out in music the nature of the spiritual and the nature of meditation. So this is something of a one-off disc. It is something for those of you fascinated by the little-known and underrated. --Gary Higginson, MusicWeb, March 2010Robert Shechtman's music is exactly what I wanted to hear exactly when I wanted to hear it. There is a simplicity to the musical materials that is skillfully propelled into emotional arcs and meaty performances. Shechtman's language is open and inviting, drawing upon pitch centric and motivic gestures with lots of space and time between events. I felt like I could really process what was being said as opposed to just trying to keep up. --Jay Batzner, Sequenza21, October 2009
