Writer Richard Harland meets socialite Ellen Berent on a train. Ellen falls in love with the writer, seeing in him a resemblance to her late father, to whom she was attached to the point of obsession. She quickly resigns her former fiance Russell Quinton and marries Harland. It gradually turns out that Ellen is pathologically jealous of any person or occupation that her husband is not indifferent to. First, Richard's younger brother, unable to walk, (accidentally) drowns. Then a pregnant Ellen (accidentally) falls down the stairs, losing her baby. When Ellen confesses everything to Richard, he leaves her. Ellen decides to poison herself, hoping in this way to frame her cousin Ruth, to whom Richard is very attached. Russell Quinton is the prosecutor at the trial. Under pressure, Ruth admits that she loves Richard. Richard then testifies to Ellen's jealousy and confessions. Ruth is acquitted and Richard is sentenced to two years in prison for covering up Ellen's actions.
