Alnico is an acronym referring to a family of iron alloys which in addition to iron are composed primarily of aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co), hence al-ni-co. Alnico alloys are ferromagnetic, with a high coercivity (resistance to loss of magnetism) .

About AOMAG® 4.14" U-Shaped Alnico Horseshoe Magnet
Measuring 4.14" in length, this small U-shaped magnet is ideal for classroom demonstrations and physics laboratory experiments. Made of Alnico, which is an alloy composed primarily of aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni), and cobalt (Co), it is ferromagnetic, which is to say that it was formed into a permanent magnet. It has been carefully painted red on one half of the magnet and green on the other, to denote the north (red) and south (green) poles. The U-shaped magnet has approximate overall measurements of 4.14x2.68x0.8x0.09" , and includes a steel keeper bar to help protect the poles from damage or loss of magnetism. WARNING - The magnet is very fragile, it is forbidden to collide with other metal objects (including another magnet), so be careful when you are trying separte them !
